Calculating Quartiles in SPSS/IBM

To calculate the first, second and third quartiles along with their respective interquartile range using IBM's SPSS software:

1. Open your dataset within SPASSPSS.

2. Click on 'Analyze' > 'Descriptive Statistics'.

3. In the resulting dialogue box, select 'Quantities...' from the left-hand side panel under 'Options'.

- Q1 represents the first quartile or 25th percentile.

- Median (50%) denotes the median value, which is also known as the third quartile in this case since we have an even number of observations.

Interquartile Range

The interquIRTILE range (IQR) measures how spread out the data points are from the first to third quartiles. It can be calculated using following formula:

IQR = Q3 -Q1

In our example above,

IQR=6.78901234-(-2.1234567)=4.6755845

A larger IQR indicates that there is more spread in your data, while a smaller value suggests otherwise.
